In 2006 adults ≥ 65 made up 15% of the county’s population
• By 2030 the population age 65 and older will increase 42% to 12,418 people. This group will make up 22% of the county’s population.
• Compared to the state, older adults are less educated, 45% live in rural areas, 33% are African American, and 29% have two or more disabilities.
• The median income is slightly lower than the state average, and more older adults are below the poverty level.
• There are more hospitalizations and physician’s visits due to heart disease compared to the state.
