In 2006 adults ≥ 65 made up 15% of the county’s population
• By 2030 the population age 65 and older will increase 45% to 12,225 people. This group will make up 24% of the county’s population.
• Compared to the state, older adults are less educated, more live in rural areas (56%), there are more African Americans (42%) and Native Americans (2.1%) and 34% have two or more disabilities.
• Designated a Dental Care Shortage Area in 2006.
• Median incomes are $10,000 less than the state average. Twice as many older adults are below the poverty level.
