In 2006 adults ≥ 65 made up 12% of the county’s population
• By 2030 the population age 65 and older will increase 63% to 10,717 people. This group will make up 15% of the county’s population.
• Compared to the state, older adults are less educated, 88% live in rural areas, there are more African Americans, and greater numbers of disabilities.
• The median income is significantly lower than the state; over 33% of those aged 75+ are at or below poverty.
• More older adults are in the workforce, and a large number of those age 65 and over are unemployed.
