In 2006 adults ≥ 65 made up 14% of the county’s population
• By 2030 the population age 65 and older will increase 45% to 11,159 people. This age group will make up 19% of the county’s population.
• Compared to the state older adults are less educated, 88% live in rural areas, 26% are African American, and 35% have two or more disabilities.
• The median income is significantly lower, and twice as many individuals are at or below the poverty level.
• Arthritis and diabetes are common, accounting for 21% of all physician visits.
