In 2006 adults ≥ 65 made up 19% of the county’s population
- By 2030 the population age 65 and older will increase 70% to 8,279 people. This group will make up 28% of the county’s population.
- Compared to the state, older adults are less educated, primarily white (98%), 29% have 2 or more disabilities, 34% are at the poverty level, and 100% live in rural areas.
- Greater numbers of residents are hospitalized for respiratory diseases compared to the state.
- The Ashe Senior Center has been recognized as a center of excellence for the past three years.
